Is Delay In Menstruation A Sign Of Pregnancy?

Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,

I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend (but did NOT ejaculate inside her) on the 19th of this month. I gave her an ipill within 13 hours. Its already 27th and she does not have vaginal bleeding and isn't showing any signs of the bleeding, I'm extremely worried. Normally, it takes 4-5 days for the bleeding to occur and this is worrying me a lot. Please tell me what I should do. She is also undergoing loose motions from today (27th). I was wondering if it's an effect of taking the ipill.

Brief Answer:
need more information

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic.I understand your concern.
In my opinion ipill is 95% effective in preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse.
I would like to know following information for better suggestions:-
1)Are the menstrual cycles regular?
2)When is the expected date of period?
3)Did you take any hormonal pills or ipill previously?
4)Is there any associated pain abdomen along with loose motions ?
Kindly provide me information.
Looking forward to hear from you.

Dear Doctor,

No her periods are not regular. Last month, she had periods thrice and had to visit her gynecologist. She seems extremely relaxed about the fact that she hasn't started bleeding yet. I feel very tensed though. Her expected date for this month's period was around 25th. How long does it take for the bleeding to occur after consuming an ipill?

Brief Answer:
ipill causes hormonal imbalance

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for the information.I understand your concern.
In my opinion the delay in period might be due to the ipill effect.
The ipill is a high dose progesterone.Due to this it causes hormonal imbalance leading to effect on the timing and bleeding of the period.
The period might delay upto a week or ten days and the bleeding might be scanty or heavier.
The sideeffects of ipill are nausea, vomitings, headache, menstrual irregularities etc.
But loose motions are not due to ipill. There might be stomach infection.Avoid spicy and oily diet.Take bland diet. And take adequate fluids upto 3 litres.Electrol powder is also helpful.
If not subsiding with these measures and if any fever develops then you might need antibiotics.
The chances of pregnancy are rare because ejaculation did not occur and ipill has also been taken within stipulated time.
So relax. The delay in period might be ipill effect.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss further.
Best regards...Dr.Srilatha
