Posted on Tue, 7 Feb 2017
Question: Hello, I am 26 years old and gave birth to a boy in 26th october 2015. Approx. in XXXXXXX or july 2015 I was starting to have alcohol cravings while being pregnant. Instead of drinking alcohol I started to eat mints and it became a mint craving. Since then, I started to eat a lot of mints, every single day. I wake up feeling the need to eat and mints...why is that????

Brief Answer:
This is addiction

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

From the available description it appears that there is dependence on mint which is well recognised. Although it is very mild form off addiction but there is increasing evidence which suggests that it forms dependence and producing cravings when attempted to reduce the dose or stopped.

Although the treatment is similar like any other kind of addiction but I feel a gradual reduction can help you in complete abstinence. I also like to assure you that there are no known serious effects of mint use till date. You can consider as equal to caffeine.

I hope this answers you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks again.

Thank you for the prompt answer. It is really annoying to wake up with the desperate need to eat mints, I haven't explained to you how it is..I have excessive saliva and my tongue feels strange, not painful, not swollen, it's just..strange, it's like that feeling you get when you hold alcohol in your mouth couple of seconds, I don't know how to explain.
