Is Excessive Urination After A TURP Surgery A Concern?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Feb 2017
Question: I had Turp surgery 4 and 1/2 weeks ago. The first few weeks after the surgery I still had some blood in my urine especially if I climbed stars or walked a lot. The blood has now disappeared the last few days but I continue to have to pee a lot especially if a drink caffine late in the evening. I have had my follow-up with my urologist and he says everything is fine and does not need to see me for 3 months. Will this urge to urinate lessen up in the weeks ahead. By the way the report came back on my prostate tissue and it was negative for cancer and my PSA remains at 0.3.

Brief Answer:
Please provide few more details

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have undergone surgery of TURP for enlarged prostate 4 months back and still facing problem of urgency for urination

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Did you have urgency for urination before surgery of TURP .?
2) What was the size of prostate ? What was the post void residual urine volume (PVR)reported on Ultrasound Scanning of abdomen done before surgery ?
2) Are you diabetic? if yes is it well controlled ?
3) Does it embarrass your routine life and do you dribble out urine in inner wares at any time during sensation of urgency and unable to reach to toilet urgently?

The urgency for urination is mostly due to what is called as Over Active Bladder (OAB) which if you had before surgery too ,will not go away even after surgery for TURP.

Get your routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.

Take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefixime along with urinary antiseptic like
Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkaliser thrice daily.Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Take anti muscuranic drug like Darifenasin once daily .You may need to take it for 6 months and review again .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Well actually my TURP surgery was 4 and 1/2 weeks ago not 4 months ago. I had a large kidney stone that was trapped in my bladder due to an enlarged prostate that was pressing against my bladder and consequently I was unable to empty my bladder completely which my urologist feels led to the formulation of the stone. Also he said the inside of my bladder was irritated from the large stone floating around and jabbing me. And yes I was going to the bathroom frequently day and night before surgery. I don't know what my PVR was before surgery but they did one 2 weeks after surgery and it showed my bladder was emptying completely. I am not diabetic. My last fasting blood test less than a year ago showed a A1c reading of 5.2. I don't dribble out or have trouble holding my urine if I have to go to the bathroom but since the surgery I feel like the inside of my penis is stretched and I have dribbling after I empty out my bladder. I don't feel the urge to go to the bathroom immediately after I go the first time but I do a few hours later and I again fill up the toilet even if I haven't drank anything in the meantime. This is annoying and I am not getting a sound 6 to 8 hours of sleep because of it. I hope this will give you more information as to my problem.

Brief Answer:
It takes three months to resolve sthese symptoms completely .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for feedback .
You had undergone TURP for BEP with stone in the bladder four and half weeks back and have frequency for urination and incomplete emptying of bladder .

During surgery of TURP Urologist resects your enlarged prostate which creates a raw area .This raw area causes irritation and is the reason for irritative symptoms .It takes threemonths for complete healing of the raw area .

Get your urine test and urine culture done to rule out UTI which is also the common factor for irritative bladder symptoms .

Till the then take antibiotics as per urine culture report along with bladder anti spasmodic like Oxybutinine twice daily

Do not worry these are common problems after surgery of TUPRP that evry body has ton pass through which gets resolved over a period of time frame of 3-4 months .

Thanks and Regards.
