Is Extreme Cold Feeling In A Flu Patient A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jun 2016
Question: About three weeks ago i had the flu which also included having a cough. I did take antibiotics (Keflex) and a cough syrup for the coughing which was troublesome. The coughing had gotten much better. Since last week the coughing seems to have returned, and in since i had the flu i have been feeling extremely cold alot of the time. I find it hard to get warm, and my hands and especially legs are so cold all the time to the point that it feels very uncomfortable. I can't recall ever having felt cold like this and where i cannot keep myself warm no matter what i do. I am continuing to take cough mixture for the coughing but the intense cold feeling is something new to me and is causing me some concern.

Hello again Doctor,
i think that i have food intolerances, and i have noticed that at certain times of the year, my nose tends to run and it drives me crazy. i do have allergies though like dust allergies and certain types of grass.
As for the runny nose this is not the first time i have had this, but this time it seems a little worse. Like it won't stop. It isn't very runny like when you get a cold or the flu but it constantly feels wet, and small amounts of water or mucus, or whatever it is comes out. It is clear liquid from what i can tell.
No i am not taking anything for the runny nose.

You are mostly having allergic rhinitis.

So by your history and description, in my opinion, you are mostly having allergic rhinitis.
So you should definitely take intranasal spray containing steroids (fluticasone) and oral combination of antihistamine (levocetrizine or fexofenadine) and anti allergic (montelukast).
Please let me know

Yes i have seen an ENT doctor in the past, but that was a long time ago.
No i don't think i have ever taken any of those drugs that you mentioned

At the time that i had seen the ENT doctor it was more for a different concern, which was that my nose would often bleed. So back then i don't think i had too much of an issue with a runny nose or allergies that i was aware of.
But there was one issue that i did mention to you at the start of this discussion that you didn't fully address, if you could please, which was the constant feeling of being cold that i am experiencing?

When i say i feel cold, i mean i feel cold temperature wise. My feet are always cold and my hands too, but more so my hands to the point that its uncomfortable. Even when i try to get warm i still feel cold. I haven't really felt this cold before. I don't know if this has anything to do with having had the flu a few weeks ago and it's possibly turned into something else or what.
I have the heater turned on now and my legs still feel cold.

Okay,
it's interesting that you should mention Hypothyroidism, is in 2010 i had a total thyroidectomy due to papillary cancer. i have since then, been taking Thyroxine.
i can't remember when my general practitioner last checked my thyroid levels, but i think it was some time ago, and i used to see a specialist once a year after my surgery and treatment but he said i didn't need to anymore. Yet when i saw my GP one day she told me that i should still see a specialist yearly.

Yes, of course you can ask what you wish.

i am having stress from different types of things.
Some of it is due to family problems, and the other is due to my health, physical and mental. The Schizoaffective disorder that i have been diagnosed with causes me a lot of grief and and i tend to also have Obsessive Compulsive tendencies which manifest as obsessive thoughts and repeated rituals such as constant handwashing and fear of certain things like germs or getting contaminated when going to use the bathroom.
oh in answer to your questions, no it is not work related, and no i am not married.

So, you are not married.
Please let me know.

2. Are you sexually active?
Sorry, if you feel bad with these questions. It's absolutely fine if you don't want to answer. I am asking these because people living alone and single (not sexually active) have higher rate of psychiatric illness.
