Is Flapping Hands A Symptom Of Autism?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: Hello doctor
My doctor is 8 months old and she has started doing hand flapping specially when she is sitting and seems excited
Also sometimes she rubs her feet
Is it something to worry about?
Hope it is not sign of autism as I read on Internet?
Otherwise she is always screaming or blabbing and always she is holding objects and putting in her mouth...
She passes smiles when we smile at her i mean she looks normal in eating and sleeping

Brief Answer:
Not a sign of autism. Normal for age.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I do not think that flapping hands should be an indication of autism. You need not worry since it seems normal for age. In case you are worried about autism, just answer the modified Autism Checklist (m-CHAT). Just google out for it and you will find it. Unless the questionnaire indicates a high risk, you need not worry.

It is also normal for children of this age to hold and put things in the mouth. No need to worry about that. Just keep harmful things away from her and things would be fine.

Hope that helps.

Brief Answer:
It is common for children to flap hands in heightened emotional status

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking back. I understand your concerns but I do not think that there is anything to get concerned. Hand flapping is a self-stimulatory activity that many children do when upset or in heightened emotional state. The following article should be helpful for you in this regard.

Unless m-CHAT shows signs for concern, you need not worry about autism.

Brief Answer:
Diagnosis before 16 months is difficult.Dont worry if social smile present.

Detailed Answer:
You have read it correctly. Before that period, it is not easy to diagnose signs of autism. Unless the language skills have developed, it is hard to comment on autism. In case you are apprehensive, m-CHAT has to be applied at that point of time. Before that lack of responsiveness or interactiveness should be an indication. But if the child smiles back, chances are that the child does not have autism.
