Initially she was advised she would need a full hip replacement because of the way it was broke and then subsequently advised by a half hip replacement because she's not that XXXXXXX at the best of times.
My question would be will the half replacement mean another operation in two years time and how much reduced mobility is a half than a full hip replacement? What would be more stressful for her body?
She has a mechanical valve in her heart because of a heart valve failure - what impact would this have in relation to surgery?
She should go ahead with half hip replacement
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and I think she should get half hip replacement. Half hip replacement are of two variety.
1.AMP- In patients with very limited mobility and life expectancy less than 1 year.
2.Bipolar- patient with moderate activity and life expectancy ten to twenty years.
So I think you should choose Bi polar half hip replacement for her.
It will give her full mobility from third day of surgery. She will not be able to squat though. Also she will not be allowed to sit on ground.
There is no need to go for total hip replacement in her case. It is a big surgery and more dangerous in heart patients. Also since she is 75, It does not offer any advantage. It is good for patient around 50 or younger.
There is no difference in mobility between bi polar and total hip replacement.
As far as her heart condition is concerned, any surgery is little risky in her. I hope doctors will explain you in detail. She may need ICU for few days. But we do these surgeries very commonly in XXXXXXX and I believe surgery is best option in her.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
