Is Intake Of Viagra Advisable While On Amlodipine?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Feb 2016
Question: I am 55 years old and I am on amlodipine 5mg for nearly 5 years and therefore my BP is normal 120/80. I do not take any other medication and I am fit and fine. Since I experience erectile dysfunction often I want to take Viagra 25 mg, perhaps 4 continuous days a week to begin with. However, I am worried that it would interact with amlodipine. Therefore, I want to ask you doctor whether I should stop taking amlodipine on those days when I am on Viagra 25 mg. Waiting for your answer please.
By the way I gave up smoking a couple of months ago and I am prescribed Nicotex 4mg chewing gum which I chew 4 to 5 times a day.

Brief Answer:
Review blood pressure and amlodipine dose if taking viagra 4 times weekly

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Blood pressure is the pressure with which blood flows through the arteries. It is recorded by measured by recording the pressure exerted by the flowing blood on the walls of the arteries.

2. Measurement of blood pressure is done after at least 30 minutes of physical and mental rest. This is to be measured on 3 subsequent days at the same time of the day and using the same machine. If the resting blood pressure is above 140/ 90 mm Hg on all three occasions then the person can have a high blood pressure and requires detailed investigation.

3. Therefore it is important to know when your were diagnosed to have high blood pressure and if your blood pressure was measured on 3 days and found to be higher than 140/ 90 mm Hg and then medicine was started.

4. If your blood pressure is 120/ 80 mm Hg after medicine then it is normal. Amlodipine is a good medicine and 5 mg is a small dose.

5. Viagra dose of 25 mg is low dose and will not cause much interaction with amlodipine. Research has shown that the blood pressure after taking amlodipine 5 mg or 10 mg, and Viagra, 100 mg together then patients had a decrease in blood pressure of 8 mm Hg systolic and 7 mmHg diastolic blood pressure.

6. If your blood pressure is 120/ 80 after amlodipine regularly then you can skip taking amlodipine when you are taking viagra.

7. However if you are taking viagra 4 times in a week then it needs to be reported to your doctor to review your medicines and keep blood pressure in control and allow you to take viagra because missing amlodipine 4 times a week is not good. If required you doctor will change dose of amlodipine after clinical examination.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.

Thank you doctor for your measured reply. I will certainly follow your advice. However, you have not factored in my nicotine therapy. As part of my smoking cessation programme I am prescribed Nicotex 4mg chewing gum which I chew not more than 4 to 5 every day. Of course, I will stop it after a couple of months. But until then can I take Viagra 25 mg at regular intervals?
Looking forward to your answer.
Thank you in anticipation

Brief Answer:
There is no serious interaction between Nicotex and Viagra

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. There is no serious interaction between Nicotex and Viagra. Therefore I did not feel it important to mention about any problems in the earlier reply. Please continue with your smoking control program and my best wishes are with you. You can continue to take Viagra when required keeping in mind regular precautions of the medicine.

Hope your query is answered.
