Is Intermittent Constriction Of The Esophagus While Eating Indicative Of A Food Allergy?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Jan 2024
Question: I ate food and felt my esophagus constrict making difficult to swallow and then developed chills and light-headed. I have been getting treated for an allergic reaction but now 3 days later while under treatment I finally started eating again and while I was eating, I developed the same constriction of my esophagus and once again developed chills. I laid down and it seemed to pass quickly. Is this normal for a food allergy or what are your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Wait for few more days.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Food allergies take atleast 6-7 days for complete recovery. So your symptoms are normal for food allergies.
You are taking benadryl and methylprednisolone.
Both are best anti allergic drugs.
So no need to stop any drug.
Continue benadryl and methylprednisolone for atleast 7 days.
Avoid foods which are allergic to you.
Drink plenty of fluids orally. Avoid hard to chew food.
Do warm water gargles and steam inhalation 4-5 times a day.
Please let me know
1. How many times you are taking benadryl?
2. In what dose you are taking methylprednisolone?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Benadryl was only given to me intravenous on 1st day. I've been taking the methylprednisolone on a 6 day cycle which started with 6 pills day 1, then 5, 4,3, 2 ,1 pills per day until I run out. Each pill is 4 mg.

I'm also concerned that in addition to my esophagus which although better, seems to be very sensitive and continues to be irritated quite easily causing constriction. Although the constriction appears to be lasting less time, it is still of concern to me.

Finally, I have continued loss of appetite. Is it normal for me to have continued loss of appetite for this long?

Brief Answer:
I think you should also take antacid along with methylprednisolone.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Sorry for late reply as I was busy.
In my opinion, you should also take combination of pantoprazole and levosulperide.
Methylprednisolone in oral tablets can also cause gastritis, nausea etc.
This can add to your symptoms severity.
So better to take combination of pantoprazole and levosulperide twice daily on empty stomach.
Also take antihistamine (levocetrizine or fexofenadine) twice daily for faster relief.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
