Is It Common For Bile Duct Stent To Fail Immediately After Placement?

Question: Hi. I had a bile duct stent 5 days ago. There was relief from my symptoms for about 18 hours but since then symptoms have been the same as before I had the stent fitted. Abdominal pain mainly in upper right quadrant, intense pain after eating and a feeling of nausea. During the ERCP the surgeon took a sample of some cells as there is a mass at the head of my Pancreas. There is a suspicion of Pancreatic cancer as my CA 19-9 levels are elevated to 69. Is it common for a bile duct stent to fail almost immediately after placement? Or possibly not work at all? Thanks XXXXXXX
Brief Answer:
Possbily transient dysfunction of stent

Dear Mr XXXXXXX
The immediate relief provided by Bile duc stent is due to adequate drainage of bile through bile duct, as the bile duct patency is restored by stent.
Whether the stent is functioning can be assessed by following
1. Improvement in symptoms: Decrease in pain, fever and decrease in Icterus
2. Improvement in Liver function: Fall in serum bilirubin level, Decrease in SGOT, SGPT
3. Reduction in size of gall bladder as assessed by Ultrasound abdomen
Transiently the stent may malfunction because of associated bile duct oedema following stent insertion. Once the oedema subsides there will be improvement in symptoms.
It would be helpful if you could get back to me with all your laboratory and radiological report both before and after ERCP.
