Is It Necessary To Wear Long Splint All The Time Despite Having Discomfort In Knee?

In continuation to the previous query. My wife started taking complete bed rest. Though she does not have any pain, she started feeling discomfort on her back(because of continuous sleeping position) as well she is also feeling stiffness on her knee, at the same time some burning sensation near to her knee.
My question,
1. Does she needs to wear long splint all the time?
2. Can she turn to sides while lying down.
Details below.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Even if there is no pain in the knee she has to have a bed rest to allow the osteoporosis and the bone cracks to heal. Any weight bearing can cause further loosening of the prosthesis.
1. She should wear the splint as much as possible. While awake she can remove the splint for some time to relax but avoid moving the leg in any abnormal position.
Along with that she needs to do quadriceps drill while lying down to keep her blood circulation of the legs intact. Light massage of the calf will also help in circulation.
2. She can turn to her side when she is wearing the splint. She needs to change the side every 1-2 hours to avoid the formation of bed sores. Massaging the back and using a hot bag at the site of back pain will also help.
I hope this answers your query.

Only thing, she is not able to bend her knee. Probably doing quadriceps drill will help.
Thanks

Thanks for writing again.
Yes she is doing the right thing. The quadriceps drill will help in reducing the stiffness. She should not bend her knee. Do continue wearing the splint.
