Is It Normal To Have Soft Bone After Bone Grafting?
Question: Hi, I had a bone infection in my index finger. Had surgery and a bone graft in joint end of proximal bone. It's the joint in the center of my finger. Pin was in for almost 4 months waiting for graft to heal. Pin was removed a week and a half ago but bone is still soft. Finger will bend side to side if any pressure is put on it. Finger is obviously very stiff but I can move the joint a little. How much should I be trying to move it or not being that the bone is still soft? Thanks, CB
Brief Answer:
the bone should not be soft
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If the bone is soft then you need to see your orthopedist right away and they need to guide exactly what you are doing in physical therapy. They may even stop therapy for a while or you may need another surgery. The bone should not be soft this far out from your bone graft.
Please see your orthopedist and have them reevaluate you finger and determine what to do about the physical therapy.
Unfortunately we can not really guide you on this without examining your finger
