Question : Hi there , had a fistulectomy done last week . Is it normal ti have incontinence and spillage from the open wound. ?
Hi XXXX, during a fistulectomy, it is very common to stretch the anal sphincter to visualise the internal opening of the fistula. In addition to this, some surgeons also routinely perform a "Internal Sphicterotomy" which can lead to incontinence to gas and liquid stools. This is usually self limiting and you have nothing to worry about. it will stop once healing is complete.

Hi Doctor . I have pus and fluid coming out of the wound .
Is it normal for this to occur
How do i know if my wound is healing correctly .
What ate signs that i need to worry about for an infection .
Will the sphinster muscle return to normal after healing.
How do you assess to see if the sphinster muscle has been damaged ?

Brief Answer:
Can send a picture of the liquid
Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXX,
Now, first, we should make sure the fluid coming out of the wound is pus or just a simple wound fluid. Can you send a picture of the discharge? Make sure it is a clear picture to let me analyze.
It is normal for the fluid to come out the wound, helping the healing process. While, it is not normal to get pus, meaning it is still infected.
Do you have fever? Fever or chills are indicating infection not being healed. As you had the intervention last week, it is still early to say anything for prognosis.
Yes, after healing, the sphincter muscle will be turn back to normal again, do not worry. These types of abscess need more time to get completely healed.
Regular follow ups with proctologist is needed to evaluate the status of sphincter muscle accordingly.
Wish fast recovery!
