Is It Ok To Give Oral Antibiotics (Orolox) 5.5ml Twice A Day For 20 Months Infant?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Jun 2024
Question: My son (20 months) had pneumonia and was in hospital for 3 days with IV antibiotics. They send us home for day 4 & 5 with oral antibiotics (Orolox) 5.5ml twice a day. Yesterday was day 4 and I forgot the evening dose. My pharmacist said that I should carry on as normal on day 5, so I gave the morning and evening dose.

Should I do 1 last dose tomorrow morning? I’m so scared. Or is there something else I can do?

He has no fever and seems to be getting better. We are also nebulising with Duolin every 8 hours.

Brief Answer:
It doesn't matter: you can finish the course, or skip the last dose!

Detailed Answer:
Dear concerned parent,

I understand your agony! As you probably already know, antibiotics work by killing the bacteria that cause infection. In your son's case, the treating pediatrician had already reached the conclusion that your child was improving, and therefore decided to complete the antibiotic course with an oral antibiotic. As you have already said, you only missed one dose. Also, according to your own admission, your 20-month-old son is already looking and feeling better. You should not worry. You may either give him an extra dose, or skip it - he will still be all right .

I wish you and him good health and happiness!

With best wishes,

Dr Taher Kagalwala (UK)
