Question : Is it possible for a lumbar spine x ray series to reach a dose of 20 mSv? I am aware the average dose is 1.5 mSv but doses can vary. So my question is can a lumbar spine x ray series reach a dose of 20 mSv?

No. X-ray does not reach such high dose.

20mSv is a very high dose an X-ray. A lumbar spine X-ray series is not likely to reach such a high dose. It usually does not exceed 2-3mSv at all.
