Is It Possible To Strain Abdominal Muscles Post Lower Back Injury?

Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: can you strain your adominal and flank muscles while also injuring your lower back during a workout?
The pain started a day after adding a clean and press to my workout. The discomfort is on the right side lower back/Hip and on the right flank and lower right abdominal. There is no pain on abdominal region only slight tenderness. Also some discomfort into the groining on the righ side. I felt better after a week and a half and did deadlifts and the next day I felt the same but not as bad. I am taking Mobic for inflammation and have had once adjustment at a chiropractor.

Brief Answer:
Muscle sprain likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain that you have is likely to be due to a slight muscle sprain or tear due to stress during the workout. This can improve after taking oral muscle relaxants. You need to give your painful muscles a rest. Avoid all the painful movements for at least 3 weeks and allow the muscles to heal well.
Doing a hot compress in the area will also help. In case the pain is persistent or is severe then you can consult an orthopedician and get an MRI scan done to detect any spine related issues.
I hope this answers your query.

Brief Answer:
Avoid running.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Avoid running also if it causes pain in the area. The muscle sprain takes weeks to heal. Rest is the main treatment. Since it has been re injured do take a rest for at least 3-4 weeks.
Hope my answer is helpful.
