Is It Safe To Fly When I Have Swelling After Knee Replacement?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Dec 2021
Question: My 72 year old dad has to get both carotid arteries cleaned out. Both arteries were 90. He had his left one done on May 30th and was home. He's a very stubborn man and is still insisting on flying to Germany for his annual visit to see his mom and plans on getting the right side done after his 2-3 week trip also meaning he will have to fly again on his way home...both carotid arteries were 90 and hes 6 foot 1 200 pounds with an old school beer belly and is also dealing with swelling in his 18 month old replaced knee(possible CYST) should he be allowed to fly? Its also not helping that his 90+ yr old mom has no idea hes had and still needs surgeries and this is now the 10th+ guilt filled trip "I think this is the last trip ill be alive" she tells him...appreciate your time and concern Doctors

Brief Answer:
Detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,
Firstly if he is stubborn you are smart.
Present the documents of caroptid angiogram to the concerned airlines a day before via mail and he would not get a fit to fly.
However in case he has to go to his mom then we need to keep him on high dose of antiplatelets like Clopigrel 75 mg twice and aspirin 150 mg once for the days till he get his carotid stented.
90% blocked patients are managed in developing countries by medical conservative management and most of them do well on medications(money is a issue in developing nations).
Suggestion
Tab clopigrel 75 mg twice daily
Tab ecosprin 150 mg once daily
Tab Atorvastatin 80mg once daily
Get a prescription and give him these medicines.Keep in mind his left one is already open plus these medications. So chances of any severe ischemic attack are a bit less.
Overall;
A bit risky but can travel for 3-4 weeks.
Otherwise follow plan A.
Mail reports to concerned airlines and he won't get a clearance till surgery is done.
Thanks.
