Is It Safe To Have Knee Replacement Surgery At The Age Of 76?

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Jul 2015
Question: I am 76 and have had knee pain off and on for about 5 years. I've had a few steroid injections and they worked (except one). I had a knee X-ray yesterday and the orthopedist said I need a total knee replacement. I have CFIDS (some believe it is actually MCAS) an inflammatory condition. I want to avoid surgery if I can.

Is there a doctor in XXXXXXX who does "customized" knee replacements, i.e., create a knee from MRI's of your own knee instead of using the "generic" and cutting it down, etc.?

I have some heart problems also and surgery might be too stressful. Also, I live alone so ideally, I'd like therapy at home or stay at a specialty hospital for the duration of the therapy.

Brief Answer:
Suregry can be delayed by 1-2 years.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
At the age of 76, having a knee replacement surgery can be stressful. You need to have a detailed medical check up before planning for the surgery.
Since you got relief after taking steroid injections, you can continue with steroids and joint lubricant supplements like Hyaluronic acid with regular physiotherapy for next 1-2 years. This can help in delaying the surgery.
In case the pain is unbearable and is not controlled with medicines then knee replacement is necessary.
I do not know of any surgeon who does a customized knee replacement. You can consult regarding this from your treating orthopedician. He is the best person to give you proper recommendations.
I hope this answers your query.
