Is It Safe To Shift From Atenolol To Coreg After Heart Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: Had open heart surgery in 2007 & have been on Atenolol Simvastatins, aspirin. I also have type 2 diabetes & take spironolactone, metformin, glimepiride & hctz. My regular physician wants to change my atenolol to coreg 6.25 2 x daily. Should I talk to my heart doctor before I make this change? Or would this be a normal change?

Brief Answer:
mention serial blood pressure readings

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I read through the query.

You are talking about anti Bp medicines. Coreg is carvedilol which is both beta and alpha blocker. This is very good drug to control resistant blood pressure. Since this is a major change I would like to know serial bp readings and how are current set of medications I.e. atenolol and hctz are working.

Generally clinicians add extra set of anti hypertension medicines if the target bp is not achieved in a high risk persons. You suit to this category with diabetes and on anti cholesterol medicines.

Though not a normal change it is better to talk to the one doctor who was following you all these years and know the thick of your profile.

Hope this is informative and decisive.
