Brief Answer:
Insulin is safe in pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Welcome to HCM. I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

High sugars can cause adverse outcome for both mother and baby in pregnancy. The treatment option in diabetes in pregnancy (Gestational diabetes - GDM) is insulin or medications like metformin. Of which the safer option is insulin.

Diet modification can bring down sugars to normal in most cases of GDM. Frequent small meals of low calorie rich in fibre are suggested. You can take fruits like apple or orange.

Once on treatment, whether insulin or diet, the fasting plasma glucose should be less than 95 mg/dl and 1 and 2 hours after should be less than 140 and 120 mg/dl.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Brief Answer:
The levels are high. Better to be on insulin

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Welcome back.

These levels are high. It is better to be on insulin till the targets are achieved.

Diet plan:

Split the meals into 7-8 times a day.
3 Major meals and 3-4 snack is always better than taking 3 meals a day.

More vegetables, salads, whole grains
Less refined sugars, white rice, carbs

Snacks:
Any one of the following at a time-
a. Fruits: 1 apple / orange/ small banana
b. Fluids: 200ml Lime juice, butter milk
c. Egg white: 1-2 egg whites
d. 1 Brown bread vegetable sandwich
e. 200ml vegetable soup

Breakfast: 2-3 idly / Dosa / Chapatti / a cup of oats / 1 cup corn flakes with vegetable curry.
Lunch: Salads,1 cup rice (parboiled), with vegetable curry, fish curry
Dinner: Make it chapattis, or oats or anything with whole wheat, salads, vegetable curry

Have insulin before major meals as advised by your doctor, and increase the doses till the target sugars are achieved.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
