Question: A nurse advised me to take Mononessa for the 1st month after I got started on the Depo provera shot. When I got to my period pills I went online to find out if I should take them..What I found online is that Depo and Mononessa shouldn't be used together cause they cancel each other out...so..am I protected? Do I need to keep using back up until my next shot?

Brief Answer:
use only depot with barrier contraception

Detailed Answer:
hello .
thanks for contacting health care magic.

Well it is true that two forms of hormonal contraception should never be used together. Mononessa is estrogen and progestogen together whereas depot is only progestogen, hence mononessa because of its estrogen content may nullify the effect of depot in the initial weeks of cycle leaving you unprotected. you may experience intermenstrual spotting if both taken together.

Advise would be to use only depot monthly with barrier contraception till periods stop completely.

So do I have to take the shot again in order to be protected again? Or do I just wait until my 1st 13 weeks are up and continue using barrier contraception until then?

Thank you for your help! One last question, is spermicide safe to use as a barrier contraception with the Depo?

Brief Answer:
yes its safe

Detailed Answer:
Helo.
thanks for the follow up.

yes it is safe to use spermicide with barrier contraception. Infact there are brands available with pre impregnated spermicidal action among the barrier contraceptives which may be uaed. The only concern is the allergy factor which may out surface due to spermicide in some patients.
