Is Laser Surgery An Option To Treat External Hemorrhoids?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jul 2015
Question: I am 68 and have suffered with external hemmoroids for about 35 yrs. I became so concerned with the intense pain and hygiene issue that I requested a hemmoroidectamy from a general surgeon about 12 years ago; however, the successful outcome lasted only about a year. The surgery itself was painful but I would be glad to go through it again if I thought I could obtain long lasting relief. This condition interferes with my daily activities, including a full time job and recreation. Is there a laser surgery option available now that might provide better results?

Brief Answer:
The mode of treatment depends on the degree of hemorrhoids

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If the pain inteferes with your normal routine it is the first thing to go for intervention and remove the hemorrhoids. There are various modes to do the hemorrhoidectomy. Non surgical and surgical. Non surgical is rubber banding, sclerotherapy, Laser etc. The other is surgical stapling, open surgery.

The choice depends on the degree of hemorrhoids and the symptoms. Usually the first and second degree are only treated conservatively with Laser. Of course of skill of surgeon plus technology needs a mention as Laser is used along with other techniques. If you are in such pain I am not sure if you have third or fourth degree hemorrhoids. In such case you may need an operating procedure where they ligate and excise the hemorrhoid.

Laser can opted as it is a new modality and pain free and less post op complications unlike it was. So you should visit a Colorectal surgeon /proctologist who routinely use Laser.
