Is Low RBC Level And Monocyte Count In Blood Signs Of HIV?
Question: pl suggest something for my 3yr old child, as he is low RBC and monocytes. he having fever and o salmonella typhi 1:80 diluattion. whether there is need to check HIV test?
Brief Answer:
Iron supplementation needed.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. The microcytic hypochromic anemia as characterized by low hemoglobin level and low RBC count, is characteristic of iron deficiency anemia. This needs to be treated with iron supplementation. Deworming with a single dose of albendazole may also be advisable. The monocyte count does not seem to be a cause for concern.
Assuming that you yourself are not HIV positive and assuming that the child has not received any blood transfusions, he does not need to be tested for HIV.
1:80 titre is low titre and is not concerning. If still apprehensive, you may check for typhoid IgM antibody.
Let me know if I could help further.

Such things may be quite common.

Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond faster.
If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol or acetaminophen (P-250, Crocin or Tylenol) to bring down. If paracetamol is not effective in bringing down the temperature, you need to use Meftal-P (mefenamic acid) which is more effective. The minimum gap between two doses of Crocin is 4-6 hours. The doses of Crocin and Meftal P are independent of each other. Minimum gap between doses of Meftal P is 6-8 hours. However, I do not think that they would be needed to be used simultaneously. Also use tepid sponging.
Giving steam inhalation to your child helps in reducing the congestion. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief.
Give him colorful fruits and vegetables regularly. They contain vitamins, minerals and plenty of antioxidants which should help in boosting the immunity of your child.
Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.
