Is Mild Cognitive Impairment Possible At The Age Of 22?

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Aug 2015
Question: Is it possible to have mci at 22? I scored highly on the ravlt (95th percentile), corsi block test (75th percentile), reverse digit span (97th percentile) and the memtrax but did poorly on the moca (below 26) and the rey figure copy test (bottom 5 %). My memory in daily life (events, conversations) is not impaired at all but my memory for new vocabulary and new/foreign names is impaired for example I struggle to learn new words and try and repeat them over and over with failure to learn.

Brief Answer:
No its not possible to have MCI at 22 years age commonly

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. It is not possible to have MCI or mild cognitive impairment at 22 years of age. You scored good on Corsi Block test, Digit Span test. MemTrax and Ravit test and this shows that you have good memory short term as well as good attention and concentration. This rules out any evidence of dementia.

MoCA is used for detecting cognitive impairment and has good sensitivity but as your all other tests have good scores so it can't be used as an evidence of MCI. Similarly Ray Figure test though is a sensitive test but a lot of individuals may perform poor because of a number of factors. Even in anxiety individuals may perform poor on these tests.

Your memory to day to day events is normal and this also rules out cognitive impairment. Struggle to learn new words, difficulty to repeat new words could occur due to difficulty in learning but this is not cognitive impairment. So no need to worry.

Poor performance on these tests will not put you in MCI.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts. Take care
