default
Posted on Mon, 7 Jul 2014
Question: I had a compressed ulnar verve on my left arm. Surgery was opted. Since the condition was noticed and diagnosed, six months had passed. There was considerable muscle atrophy. What is the likelihood of the nerve regenerating and regaining some of the muscle loss in my hand?

Brief Answer:
EMG/NCV test helps to assess the progress if any

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for posting
I have gone through your query carefully, I hope you are nondiabetic ?Whenever the nerve get's compressed it's outer covering(myelin sheath) get lost resulting in nerve disruption and resultant muscle atrophy.
The nerve regenerate maximum in first 3-6 month and to the best 9 months after the nerve decompression surgery. During this period muscle stimulation by Tran’s electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy keep the muscle active and help in early recovery. This also prevents muscle contracture and joint stiffness.
EMG/NCV test help in the diagnosis of nerve pathology and to assess the healing in nerve damage.
My advice would be get TENS therapy by physiotherapist to keep muscle active and prevent atrophy.Do not lose hope.
Hope this helps and I shall be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
