Is Numbness On Finger After Trauma Normal?

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Sep 2014
Question: I recently had an injury which resulted in the loss of two fingers ( index & middle) on my left hand. Work place accident. A team of doctors spent 10 hours in the operating room. They could not successfully reattach the middle finger die to excessive damage. The index finger was saved but it was surgically attached to the middle finger position. Reason for this was to regain a better grip after rehab. The implanted fiberglass pink for 5 days. My length of stay in the hospital. I went home that weekend and the fingertip started changing colors. Doctors told me that it is normal and it is the dead muscle tissue. New muscle will form and the old black part will molt off. Should the fingertip only, have changed colors? I can move my stub of an index finger. I cant move my middle finger really. Again, major trauma, i understand that. I kept my arm at heart level the entire time. I tried to stretch my arm above my head, and lock my elbow for one minute.....my index, middle finger, ring finger will go numb as a result. My right arm doesnt have this problem. Am I at risk for losing my fingertip? Is the numbness "normal" after such a trauma?

Brief Answer:
Numbness is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The numbness in the fingers on stretching the hand above the head is a normal finding. This is not suggestive of a dying tissue. The numbness will gradually decrease as the proper blood circulation is established in the fingers.
The mild change in the color of the tip of finger is also normal. The finger is likely to recover. It will take time. Please do not worry.
I hope this answers your query.

Many thanks for the reply. In your experience, is it worth while for the patient to seek out robotic prosthetic fingers? I understand there is a fair amount of surgery involved to join the nerves in the wrist to a neural "junction" that is connected to the robotic extension. I work a lot with hands, albeit limited in the future due to this accident. My orthopedic surgeon said that this is not available in this country (Greece), and that Germany or UK might be a viable option. I only bring this up because I would like my hand whole again, not just for social situations but also for regaining the ability to pick up objects and reduce any psychological inflictions when I see a missing finger.

Thanks in advance,

Pete

Brief Answer:
Robotic prosthesis works well.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Robotic fingers prosthesis work well but are difficult to attach. It will help in a better grip and will reduce the feeling of disability. The surgeon can decide after a direct examination regarding how successful these will be. You can get the surgery done in UK.
Hope my answer is helpful.
