Question: I just found out I have pneumonia. It's due to aspiration caused by acid reflux. I'm on antibiotics now. How serious is this?

Brief Answer:
Acid reflux is unlikely to cause Pneumonia.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.

Did the doctor confirm the cause due to acid reflux? Acid reflux very rarely cause Pneumonia. Usually food reflux if aspirated can cause Aspiration Pneumonia. But it is usually occurs in debilitated people like bed ridden patients, unconscious patients.

Pneumonia most commonly is Community Acquired. It can be viral or bacterial. Fungal Pneumonia do occur but viral and bacterial are more common.

Severity depends on WBC count, respiratory rate and involvement of other organs. Please upload any investigation reports done for this concern.

If you are being treated on OPD basis with Antibiotics, it is unlikely to be very serious otherwise your doctor would have admitted you.

I hope it helps.

If you have any further query, please ask me.

This is a separate question but I am very impressed with your answers. I got my lab test results back yesterday and my sodium level was 125. Is this too low?

Brief Answer:
It is low.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Serum Sodium level of 125 is low. This required correction.
If you are on any diuretic you would require to stop that for the time being.
If you have any swelling over the body or legs this might be due to dilutional hyponatremia.
I would advise you to increase salt in diet for 2 days and get it repeated.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
