Brief Answer:
Contraception is for prevention of pregnancy, so is not needed in oral sex

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can successfully clarify some information for you.

Contraception refers specifically for medication and/or devices used to prevent pregnancy only. Oral sex is not a possible risk for pregnancy, so that is not a concern you need to have.

However, certain kinds of sexually transmitted infections can be spread through oral sex. You are correct in the fact that cold sores, which are caused by herpes type 1, can be spread to another partner when giving oral sex. It is generally advised that if you feel a cold sore coming on (usually by tingling and itching) or see one you should avoid kissing anywhere on another person's body on any mucus membrane, mainly the mouth and genitals, in order to prevent spread.

It is much more difficult to catch an STD through oral sex. Among women giving oral sex to a man, gonorrhea, chlamydia and herpes can infect the throat, however for a man giving oral sex, the chances are different because of the type of contact involved. The greatest chances of catching or spreading an STD is with unprotected intercourse.

Male condoms can be used to reduce exposure to STD's for the man when they are worn. It is possible to create a latex barrier to use over the surface of a woman's genitals by cutting open a condom and opening it into a flat surface. Plastic wrap cut into a large square can also be used for this purpose.

However, your overall risk of transmitting and acquiring STD's from oral sex is relatively low compared to sexual intercourse, and it is much more difficult for a man to be infected by a woman this way than vice versa.

I hope this information was helpful and adequately answered your question. If you need anything clarified, feel free to submit a follow up question to me.
