Is Pregnancy Possible Through Protected Sexual Intercourse?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Aug 2015
Question:

please my period has been delayed by a week now. I had sex with my boyfriend 3 days before my period was supposed to start and he did use a condom. Today makes it day 39 of my cycle and the longest I ever had in the last 6 months was 34 while my average is 32. Please what could possibly be the cause of this as I'm definitely ruling out pregnancy.

Brief Answer:
Occasionally a period can be delayed and it is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

If you are sure that condom was used in a ideal manner and there was no precum or semen leak into vagina, then there is no chance for pregnancy.

Occasionally a period can be delayed and it is normal. Any stress either physical or mental (change of place/work, sudden change in weight, excessive exercise and even excessive excitement) can bring about changes in hormones that cause delay in period. The delay in period in your case is most probably because of stress.

You have two options. Discuss with your doctor and take progesterone to start periods. The second option is get a pregnancy test done after 5 days. If negative don't worry about anything. Await for the period to start naturally.

I hope this helps.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.

Thank you doctor. I'm a little bit worried now as I eventually had cramps and a light spotting yesterday evening. I assumed it was my period starting, but that was all. Nothing has shown up till now. Could that mean I may be pregnant? If yes, how could that be possible as I couldn't possibly be ovulating 4 days to my next cycle right?

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
The spotting you had seems to be beginning of menstrual cycle. You may start your period in a day or two.

Rarely if one is pregnant they can have spotting like this.
I don't think you are pregnant. If at all pregnancy test becomes positive, the only explanation is that you had late ovulation in this cycle.

I hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama
