Question: i had XXXXXXX inserted around the 27 of XXXXXXX the ultrasound said i was ovulating, i had the XXXXXXX inserted at the end of the month when i usually get my period but i took the morning after pill around the 10th of XXXXXXX so i had a period then. i had sex the night that XXXXXXX was inserted because my gyno said it was effective immediately but now i am reading online that it is effective immediately only if inserted less than 10 days after ur period. should i be worried?

Brief Answer:
you would be safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
The XXXXXXX IUD has two roles to play during contraception, one is hormonal and second it acts as a contraceptive device intrauterine. So ideally if this would have been an implant then it would have been necessary to avoid intercourse for atleast 2 weeks post insertion as hormones take 2 weeks to reach a level to prevent ovulation. Hence it is always preferred that a hormonal contraceptive is applied during the safe period of the cycle when ovulation had not occurred and pregnancy has been ruled out.
In your case as you have taken a morning after pill on 10th XXXXXXX and then you would have had you menses after 4-5 days , hence by 27th ideally you should be ovulating, yes but the IUD element of the device shall prevent any implantation anyhow even if you had sex on 27th evening and by chance had the ovum fertilised. The iud element of XXXXXXX shall make the endometrium inappropriate for implantation and protect you from conception. So you would be pregnancy safe any how.
But to be on a safer side it is now advised to get a serum beta hcg test done after 8 days post intercourse to rule out any fertilisation or pregnancy anyways.

Detailed Answer:
Yes , it starts working as an iud right away and you shall not become pregnant if you had sex the same evening.
But there are few cases reported of pregnancy with iud and hence i am asking you to be doubly sure by getting a serum beta hcg test after 8 days post intercourse to rule out pregnancy conclusively.
