Is Prolonged Tramadol Intake Dangerous?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Nov 2014
Question: Hi,
I've been taking Tramadol tablets for 8years now for my back pain (two disc are gone and got one knocking on the door) I refused to take any pain relief tablets at the start but the pain was incredible, I was like it for two years. So I went to see my local doctor and he put me on Tramadol starting at a lower dosage 50mg and it felt great, felt like I was walking on air and I was only taking them once in the morning. After time it wasn't giving me the same feeling and the pain was there so I started to take them morning and night. Over time the 50mg wasn't working as good so I went to 100mg and know I'm taking 200mg twice a day and that gets me through the day, still in pain but it gets me there (not walking on air). I've seen 3 specialist and all said to young to operate which I agree and avoid the work what I do, well I can't do that I'm a horse trainer and do all my work and riding myself and I know nothing else to make a dollar. So what I am writing is Tramadol 200mg will one day kill me? Like kidney, liver disease. Without Tramadol I can't work. At the moment I'm happy with Tramadol but I wish it worked as good when I first started taking them.
Thank you for taking time to read this.

Brief Answer:
No.It won't kill..

Detailed Answer:
Hello there.Welcome to healthcaremagic.
I am Dr.Senduran,General physician hope to answer your query.
As with any other drug, the drug tramadol has got its own side effect profile. But with careful monitoring, the benefits should outweigh the risks.
Tramadol doesn't seem to affect the kidney or liver significantly in future, provided without any preexisting liver or kidney disease.Hope your kidneys, liver are working fine. However i would advise you to monitor the status of kidneys and liver with kidney and liver function tests respectively every 6 months.

The drug is mostly associated with CNS symptoms which can be controlled with appropriate dosing based on the tolerance.

Hope you are on immediate release formulation tablets. However i would strongly advise not to go beyond a dosage of 400mg a day i.e 200mg twice a day because of possible risk of respiratory depression.

In mean time, would also suggest you to visit a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist where you can learn exercises and get physiotherapy to improve your work capability and quality of life gradually but is effective.Hope i have answered your query. If any further clarifications, don't hesitate to ask.Wish you good health.Take care.
