Brief Answer:
Seems like it's his drug doing so.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back to me,
I have read your answer about the medication and i have very little doubts now that hi new med is the prime suspect in this situation.

Atenolol is a beta blocker it acts to slower down the heart and thus it lowers the BP as well. The problem which seems to be in your father's case is that the med is not wrong but it's dose is probably more than your father needs, it isn't the doctor's fault in heart meds one had to play with HIT AND TRIAL method to adjust the doses till it reaches a fixed dose.

You father is feeling lethargic and off balance probably getting some black out or dizzy spells when he would get up from a sitting position that is because his heart beat is too slow. less than 60 is slow heart beat and less than 50 is something that has to be taken care off seriously. because at that point patient starts to show symptoms like vertigo dizziness or black outs specially when he stands from sitting or lying position. Blood is pulled to lower parts of the body by gravity and heart is too slow to push it back to the brain so brain blacks out.

Beta blockers also have a side effect of causing lethargy in a few number of patients so may be as your father has just started the med so his body is responding this way to the med.

I would like you to visit his cardiologist to change the med or adjust the dose of the med.
but until he can visit his doctor I would like to give some suggestions for that I would like to know.

I would suggest such patients in my clinic to take half tablet of atenolol instead of full. until dose could be adjusted.

1) Why is he taking such a heavy dose of statin since 5 years? What were his latest cholesterole levels?
2) Why is he Taking heart slowing meds ?let it me atenolol or nifedipine? is it his BP or other heart issues?
3) What did his latest echo report show?
4) Did he ever get a heart attack?
5) Are these the only meds he is taking now a days?

Waiting for your response.

Regards.
