Posted on Thu, 22 Apr 2021
Question: I recently suspended us of digoxin, metoprolol er and losartan, having been nearly a year out of AFIB. for past week, have nursed and nearly over come urinary tract infection. am having normal b.p. and EKG results, but with rapid pulse. is this due to fighting infection? have found on wed md probable bad interaction between 2 of above meds. which one may aid in controlling pulse rate? YYYY@YYYY

Another website suggested likely bad interaction between metoprolo aban digoxin. only problem with labs lately has been high lipids. With radical changes in my diet dor last year, have lost 50+ lbs., and drastically reduce carbs and fatty meats, so the high lipids may be due to drug interaction; if not, it has me stumped!

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Regarding your concern, I would explain that the high heart rate could be related to stopping metoprolol or digoxin, as both these drugs in

From the other hand, the urinary tract infection may lead to an increased heart rate due to inflammation.

Regarding metoprolol and digoxin, you are right about the interaction between them. You should know that they both can lower the heart rate and also increase potassium plasma levels.

Anyway, I would recommend starting low doses of metoprolol to help control better your heart rate values.

I would also recommend taking an antibiotic for your urinary tract infection.

Regarding your blood lipid profile, I don't think that they are related to any drug interaction.

But, statins may help improve your blood lipid profile, if dyslipidemia persists.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above options.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
