default
Posted on Sat, 28 Oct 2017
Question: hi Doctor, my father is 65 years old, very recently, we came to know, that he has got cancer in his food pipe (which is hereditary, as my grandmother has the same ailment).

We consulted doctors, and they provided the entire procedure of operation, followed by chemotherapy & radiation.

i have also heard of replacement of food pipe. can that be an easier solution instead of going through painful journey of treating cancer.

need more information on it.

Brief Answer:
First remove the cancer tumor after chemoradiotherapy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Removal of the tumor is the main approach that is called Oesophagectomy. It is done by different approaches and if you are at good centre in good city it is done by a method which reduces the morbidity.
Only after removal of tumor the reconstruction of food pipe can be thought over.
Once the oesophagus is removed it is sent for biopsy to grade the cancer and its prognosis.
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy for esophageal cancer are delivered before the removal of oesophagus, else it is not beneficial. They are given for 30 to 60 days. After 45 days of chemoradiotherapy they do surgery to remove the oesophagus. Since it would be easy to remove the tumor after chemotherapy.
Replacement should be thought after surgery only.
