Is Silver Sulfadiazine Cream Advisable For A Child With Hep C Contamination?

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Oct 2015
Question: My daughter is using silver sulfadiazine cream for a cut by her toes. In 1988, she received a transfusion after surgery contaminated with Hep C. She is asymptomatic, and her liver numbers so far are good.
I noticed that this cream can cause liver side effects. Is it safe in tiny amounts for 10 days?

Brief Answer:
Silver sulfadiazine used in burn wounds

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Silver sulfadiazine cream is not an appropriate option for treating a cut wound on the toes. Its mainly used for burn wound infections treatment and prevention.

If there is a history of burn then it can be continued. It doesn't absorb significantly to cause liver damage. A better option would be to apply local antiseptic povidone followed by mupirocin local cream.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
