Question: A recent CT scan has identified a possible ovarian cyst (up to 16mm). Should this be investigated further? I have been through menopause.

Brief Answer:
I do not see any reason to investigate this any further for now

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. A 16 mm (1.6 cm) single ovarian cyst is nothing to worry about as the usual size we look for to consider surgery is about 7.6 cms. This along with the fact that you are already menopausal does suppress most of the cause for concern and so my response to your query would be: No, there is absolutely no reason to investigate this further as long as you are not on any hormone replacement therapy.

All I would say is to go about a repeat check on the cyst to check for the size in about 6-12 months time. I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

My family history includes a younger sister who had breast cancer which she was told had genetic link; and my mother has had uterine cancer recently. In view of this family history, is there still not any cause for further investigation? I understand that ovarian cysts may not be cancer, but in view of family history, I am concerned. My sister's cancer was diagnosed at age 36 and she passed away from secondary cancers at 39.

So sorry for not replying earlier

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

The only thing I would add after receiving the history you just provided me with is a 3-6 month check on your health, paying special emphasis to your reproductive system and your breasts.

Other than this, the current status of your ovaries are totally harmless and should not really raise any cause for alarm. Check their status in 3 months, and if they have increased in size then depending on the amount of change we may have to decide whether or not to go ahead with excision or let them be due to them being harmless and most probably benign.

I hope I have explained things in a manner best understood by you. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, and also please accept my apologies for the delay as I was travelling.

Best wishes.
