Is Statin Therapy Needed To Maintain Lipid Profile?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Feb 2015
Question: I am a 64 year old woman. I take Losartan 50mg for borderline hypertension. I regularly monitor with my doctor my blood lipids. Recently my PLAC test score has risen from 245 in August 2014 which I did not like to 287 in January. I am listed as a very high risk for stroke and heart attack. I also learned in the Age Management Conference 2013 that LpPLA2 is an independent risk factor. My other cardiovascular variables (VAP test by LabCorps are generally good) LDL 92 (ref. <130), HDL 60 (ref.>40)VLDL 19 (ref. <30), total cholesterol 170 (ref<200), Lp(a) 7.0 (ref.10), HDL 2 (ref>15) , VLDL 12 (ref <10) NMR lipoprofile 916 (ref<1000), Hemoglobin A1C 5.1, Homocystein 7.2 , CRP .30. The day I had my blood test done was extremely stressful for me emotionally. I was also fasting. I have tried to find out if PLAC test scores go up with emotional stress but am unable to find an answer online. My diet is basically vegies, protein (chicken, fish and protein powder and some diary-lowfat milk, 1 oz parmesan cheese daily), , no alcohol, no smoking, very limited fruit, stevia for sweetener. I work out about 3 times per week, walking, some small amt. of interval running, weights. Blood pressure with losartan averages 130/ 75 maybe . Should I get another PLAC test soon. Are there supplements I can take to lower my scores? I am about to take Niacin 500mg. Pomegranate, continue with Quercitin 500mg. , start Aspirin 81 mg. I take COQ10 about 300 mg per day. Do I need to take a statin?

Brief Answer:
No indication for statin therapy

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs,

You have good lifestyle and good lipid profile.

As LpPla2 is relatively new method there is not much evidence about the influence of stress on the test results. Actually every strong stress activates inflammation, which can lead to high levels of the LpPla2.

In your case there is no indication for starting a statin.

You are doing very well with your lifestyle and the only thing I would advise you try to regulate stress and you can use pommegranate, vitamin D, K2, resveratrol for lowering the levels of LpPla2.

I would advise you to repeat your test in 6 months.

Hope I could help you

Wishing you good health
