Is Sudden Pain In Lower Back A Symptom Of Slip Disc?

default
Posted on Sat, 6 Aug 2016
Question: Hi doctor, yesterday when I was just about to pick my a year old son, suddenly I felt something in my lower back and I was unable to move a inch.i laid down on bed and felt like some muscle spasm or something like disk slip. as I don't know the symptoms of slip disk I applied local muscle relaxant volini and 1 tablet cip-zox. after a hour I was able to turn with help and small relief.

Over night it was same but in morning now I can walk without help but unable to sit or take pressure .

can you suggest if I should repeat the same treatment and rest for a day or should I follow something else?
what is it and how to recover?

Brief Answer:
Muscle spasm likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The sudden pain that you had was likely to be a muscle spasm. This can happen due to a sudden movement or a fall. Bed rest and a hot compress are the best to give a relief.
You need to continue with application of volini gel and do get an oral muscle relaxant prescribed in case the pain is persistent. It will subside gradually in next few days. Do lie on a hard bed and avoid bending forwards.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks for your quick response. As a precaution should I get any x-ray done ? will it be of any help? Second, is it recommended to use hot or cold "Sikai",if yes which one? and any specific movement or physiotherapy or only rest?

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
X- rays cannot detect soft tissue problem like muscle spasm or disc disease. This will need an MRI scan if pain persists. You can do a hot compress- sikai in the area. Exercise is not advised at the time of pain. It can be started after the pain subsides.
Hope my answer is helpful.
