Hello,

Thank you for the query.

I assume that you are writing about jockstrap (athletic supporter). As testicles and penis are quite mobile structures, it can get easily injured during physical activity. Moreover, testicles are the only XXXXXXX organ which is located outside.

Such supporter is used to protect testicles and penis from injury. It holds this organs tight, prevents from uncontrolled moves and protects them from the outside.

Regular innerwares can be used if there is no testicles injury possibility. On the gym it does not seem to be extremely necessary to wear a supporter.

Hernia risk is higher when you are lifting heavy objects indeed. It is because the pressure in abdominal cavity rises during lifting. But many people is physically active, lift heavy objects and do not have hernia.

You need to know that hernia is caused by connective tissue problem (a hard tissue which holds our body together, it is located everywhere in the body). Usually it is inherited tissue disorder. People with such connective tissue problem have it weaker than normally what makes this persons prone to have hernia.

If you have connective tissue disorder, no supporter will protect you from hernia when lifting heavy objects. It is impossible. Otherwise, person with regular connective tissue durability, should not have hernia from gym exercises.

What I mean is that such supporter does not protect you from hernia at all. Your connective tissue does and if it is normal, no hernia protection is necessary. If it is weak, no hernia protection will prevent the hernia.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
