Is Switching Between Ambien And Remeron For An IBS Patient Safe?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Mar 2016
Question: Hello. I am currently taking Zoloft, Ambien (zolpidem), as prescribed by my PCP. Another doctor whom I know has suggested switching from Ambien to Belsomra or Remeron. He also recommends Linzess for IBS.
What do you think of this advice?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

I've read your question carefully. Let me give you my thoughts.

I do support the suggestion to switch Ambien to Remeron. Remeron is less addictive, lower risk of nightmares, and would augment and improve the antidepressant effects of your Zoloft. It is a very effective sleep medication as well, which is what you want!

Linzess is an excellent medication for IBS. I use it regularly with my patients. As an added bonus, Remeron also has positive effects on IBS. Just one more reason why it would be a good switch.

Dr. Sheppe,

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. It is helpful.

I am still wondering about Belsomra, which appears to act somewhat
differently from other sleeping potions.

Detailed Answer:
You're most welcome!

In my opinion and experience, Belsomra is not a very effective sleep medication. Some people use it, but I would prefer Remeron in your case. Remeron is more widely used and in your case would augment and improve the effects of your other medications.
