Brief Answer:
Different possible causes

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It can sometimes be scary for a person to see blood in the urine but in many persons, the cause is not significant.

There are different possible causes such as-

(1) Infection- this would usually be accompanied by symptoms such as passing urine frequently or discomfort on urination

(2) Stone in some aspect of the urinary tract - normally associated with pain

(3) Prostate enlargement- in most men the enlargement is benign (not associated with cancer).

(4) Trauma to the urinary tract

(5) Blood disorder

(6) The side effect of medication such as medication to stop clotting eg warfarin, aspirin, Xarelto etc

(7) Cysts or other lesions in the kidney or other aspects of the urinary tract

If you had a recent PSA, this would have taken a look at the prostate and may not need to be repeated.

The urine to the lab would have looked for infection but to find if there is a structural cause eg stone or cyst or trauma- you may need an ultrasound or other imaging such as CAT-scan.

As mentioned in most persons, the cause is benign (not dangerous) but it would be good to check it out thoroughly.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions.
