Question : I have a strange-looking bruise. I barely remember bumping my arm, but I have this large (about 1" across) red mark that looks like it's blood just underneath the skin. I have had these before, and they never get purple like a bruise, but they do fade and go away in about 2 weeks. What is this? I have a picture of it, if you would like for me to send it to you.

Brief Answer:

Diagnosis: Hematoma/bruise

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The reddish- purple rash is likely a hematoma or bruise. Bruise appear reddish in the beginning and changes to purple color in 2 to 3 days. It is completely normal.

For bruise to change color as the character if hemoglobin changes with time. It can intake up to 2 weeks for the bruise to completely reabsorb.

Recurrent and spontaneous bruising are common in older individuals especially if you are on medications like Aspirin, Clopidogrel, Warfarin etc.

The hematoma or bruise will reabsorb by itself. Nothing to be worried about. You can apply ice to the area if there is pain.

Hi, I am 66 years old, but am in excellent health and and am not on any medications at all. My blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, weight, and other markers are all perfect. Why should this happen just because I am older if I don't take aspirin, blood thinners, or anything else? Thank you.

Brief Answer:

Reason for easy bruising

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

As age advances skin and blood vessels loose their elasticity. Moreover the protective fat pad around blood vessels also loosens making older individuals more prone to bruising.

If the bruising become more and more frequent, then blood investigations to rule out any bleeding or clotting problems need to be done.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
