Question: In Retina pigmentosa lot of research is going on and still there is no result. So is there any treatment for this disease in ayurveda or through acupunture.
I heard that retina transplant and gene transplant can be done in this is it true and please tell the success rate? and please suggest if nutritions having Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A can increase the vision and is there any effect in taking vitamin E.
Yoga and other meditation techniques can improve vision? Suggest the proper diet for the patient having this disease.

Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for posting your query.

Ayurveda has stated treatment for retinitis pigmentosa.

The method uses a variety of herbal medicines and other type of medicines are used to halt or reverse the degeneration process.

Medicines like Saptamrut-Loh, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Pippali etc are used in the medication.

However it is advisable to use these medicines only under an ayurvedic physician’s consultation.

Other treatment options include medicines like vitamin A, Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), topical acetazolamide (can be effective), calcium channel blockers, lutein and zeaxanthin and immunosuppressive agents.

Some medicines which need to be avoided are isotretinoin, Sildenafil (Viagra) and vitamin E.

Retina transplant are done in most of the western countries but the success is still debatable and is under research.

No current investigational protocols exist in humans for this type of intervention and no retinal prosthesis is available for clinical use, and this technology remains investigational.

Future treatments may involve retinal transplants, artificial retinal implants, gene therapy and stem cells. Gene therapy is under investigation, with the hope to replace the defective protein by using DNA vector and the phase 1 trials are still underway.

Regarding the dietary treatment, vitamin A has been effective and diet containing vitamin A can be taken. These include beet roots, carrots, chicken liver, frozen spinach, papaya and mangoes.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

As mentioned above, Ayurveda has stated treatment for retinitis pigmentosa but the success is still debatable.

As Ayruvedic specialists have proposed that the treatment would include a set of appropriate Panchakarma treatments and Rasayana therapies but the time duration of therapy and success rate can be explained by an ayurvedic physician.

You can consult Maharishi Ayurvedic hospital in Shalimar bagh, Delhi or Ayurvedic XXXXXXX in Safdarjung enclave. You can also open the following link to find good ayurvedic specialists in Delhi.
