default
Posted on Thu, 31 Jul 2014
Question: hello doctor,

i am 25 weeks pregnant today and i had some pain in my lower abdomen (left side)
the pain comes every 10 minutes and is sharp pain
i went for a transvaginal ultrasound to check cervix and kidney,
the cervix is 4.6 cm and the baby is fine but i have a 3 mm stone in my kidney
now i have two question which i am really worried about:

1) is transvaginal ultrasound safe at 25 weeks in pregnant ? i mean they put some gel and i m worried what if that gel enters my utreus? is it possible?

2) i have 3 mm kidney stone and the kind of pain i have , can it be because of kidney stone?

Brief Answer:
ULTRASOUND IS SAFE, LIKELY TO BE PAIN DUE TO STONE

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Since how long are you having the pain ?
Does it occur frequently?
As such, mild pain in the sides and lower abdomen is common because of the uterus enlarging and pressing on surrounding organs.
The cervical length is normal, and the baby is fine, so furthermore there is no cause for concern.
ULtrasound is perfectly safe at any stage in pregnancy. The gel cannot enter the uterus and even if it does, it is a tissue friendly harmless product.
The kidney stone can typically cause such pain, but it is a very small stone, so again do not worry.
Just drink plenty of liquids, atleast 5 - 6 litres per day, and the stone should pass out in the urine
You can take an antispasmodic like Buscopan, if it relieves the pain, it is likely that the stone had caused it.
Take a hot water bottle and lie on the side causing pain.
That will relieve you.
All the best
Please feel free to discuss further.

this pain comes and goes i mean it is coming after every 10 minutes.

can kidney stone cause pain at this point ?

is it normal to have a kidney pain while pregnant? or a is it a ligament stretching pain?
my doctor gave me a crocin...is crocin also ok for this pain?

my ultrasound report of kidney is as follows:

Right maternal kidney shows two markedly echogenic foci in lower pole calyx measuring approx 3 mm.
there is mild fullness of pelvicalyceal system. the ureter is not dilated.

left kidney is normal.

OPINION

in view of pain in right abdomen and findings in right maternal kidney, possibility of tiny right ureteric calculus cannot be ruled out.please note that ureter and vesico ureteric junction could not be evaluted optimally due to gravid utreus.

ALSO I AM URINATING TOO MUCH.

Brief Answer:
BUSCOPAN BETTER, SOUNDS LIKE KIDNEY STONE PAIN

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
In the main ( first ) query you mentioned pain on the left side.
The kidney stones are on the right side, so the pain should mostly be on the right.
Buscopan is better than Crocin for kidney stone pain.
Lots of pregnant women have kidney stones which can be painful, so do not worry.
Pain due to ligaments stretching is more common, but it would be constant, and not colicky and intermittent coming on every 10 minutes.
Frequency of urination commonly increases in pregnancy, also get a urine routine microscopy and urine culture test done to rule out urinary tract infection.
Take care.

Thanks doctor

Can this be pain due to constipation as I m big time constipated?

Also the pain is now moving from one place to another in my stomach..
And is kidney pain bearable as I have pain but bearable ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
TRY AND TAKE DULCOLAX RECTAL SUPPOSITORY.

Detailed Answer:
Kidney stone pain is generally quite severe, mild pain could be due to constipation also.y.

The shifting pain can be due to constipation.
Just take a laxative ( Dulcolax suppository ) rectally.
Passing motions should relieve you.
Take care.

Thankyou so much

I shall take the medicines ,

I would like to tell u that my ultrasound was internal I mean vaginally at this stage of pregnancy I.e 25 weeks

Whether these are kidney pains or constipation pains I hope these pains will not harm my baby at this stage?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (35 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
DONT WORRY ABOUT BABY, NO HARM IN ANY CASE.

Detailed Answer:
Yes I understood that it was a vaginal scan.
It needs to be done vaginally to check the cervix.
Either kidney pains or pain due to constipation will not harm your baby at all.
Hope you are relieved soon.
Please let me know if that is not so.
Take care.

Hello doctor
My pain automatically stopped very next day without any medication thanks anyway

I have two questions
1) I m 25 weeks 3 days , when should I start counting baby kicks , I mean sometimes baby kicks a lot n then 2 hours he doesn't kick at night he kicks more,
What is the ideal times he should kick. ?

2) can I go and watch movies is it ok fir the baby ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (9 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
COUNTING EXPLAINED, CAN WATCH MOVIES.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Good that the pain stopped.
As I said, non specific aches and pains are common during pregnancy, you should not be worrying about them.
You can start counting baby kicks and movements as soon as you feel them.
THere is no need to be anxious about it, if there is no problem detected in your pregnancy.
You do not need to count baby's movements at night ( obviously the baby also sleeps !! ).
Just lie on your left lateral side, after each meal ( breakfast, lunch and dinner )
So totally 3 hours , 1 hour after each meal and keep count of fetal movements.
If the total exceeds 10, dont worry and have good night's rest.
You can watch movies and keep yourself amused and refreshed.
Avoid movies with loud startling noises and vibrations.
All the best
PLease feel free to discuss further.

I just went for a scan today I.e 26 th week

Everything is ok but
Umbical cord shows a single loose loop around fetal neck

Is this normal ?
Is it umbical cord around his neck ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (4 hours later)
Brief Answer:
NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Yes it is normal to have a loop loose around the neck.
The baby will move around quite a bit and mostly the loop will dislodge itself, so do not worry.
This finding is of no concern, yes there is a loose cord round the neck, but it is not worrisome.
Take care.

Thanks a lot I was really tensed after reading the report

How long is the umbical cord I mean is it big enough to be loose?

I hope in any way this won't harm the baby ?
When should I have my next scan ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (7 hours later)
Brief Answer:
WONT HARM YOUR BABY, RELAX.

Detailed Answer:
The umbilical cord is a very long structure, around 50 cm long, and as the report clearly says, it is loosely present around the neck.
There is no way it can harm your baby.
Only tight or multiple loops around the baby's neck near the time of labour , can sometimes, that too, only sometimes, cause changes in the heart rate of the baby, thus leading to increased risk of Caesarean section.
Right now there is no need to worry at all, as I have reassured you earlier also.
If there are no more complications, then you can just have a scan again around 32 - 34 weeks.
Take care.

So does that mean that by any chance the umbical cord can harm the baby only at the time of labour?
Also do I need to count fetal movements now ?
And when should I get another scan ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (33 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
LEAST LIKELY TO HARM BABY

Detailed Answer:
Tight and / or multiple loops of cord around the neck MIGHT cause problems.
A single loose loop is least likely to cause trouble.
There is no need to count movements as such, just have a general idea.
As I said, re scan around 32 - 34 weeks.

So in no way this can cause any harm?
N is it v common ?
Also my baby is kicking too much I hope this is no sign of distress?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Aarti Abraham (6 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
REPEAT - NO RISK TO BABY.

Detailed Answer:
It cannot cause any harm at this stage.
A single loose loop of cord is found in 20 % of pregnancies.
As long as your scan is normal, do not worry.
Sometimes babies move a lot, sometimes they are quiet, so dont panic.
Take care.
