Posted on Tue, 16 May 2017
Question: Hello, This is with regards to a query for 1 of my friends. She wants to know if it is advisable to remove her uterus. She is 47 now and has a grown up son. She still gets her periods however irregular. She recently has got her pap smear and biopsy done for fibrosis in uterus and reports are ok. Doctor is suggesting her not to remove and insert some merina however she has googled this problem and thinks it would be good if she removes her uterus alltogether and that would be the end of all the problems she is facing related to her this particular organ. please advise.

Brief Answer:
Removal of uterus is associated with some complications

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.
Irregular periods are normal in the perimenopausal age group (between 42-50 years) due to the hormonal disturbances.
However, there are several medications which can rectify the problem and Mirena can also be inserted.
Hysterectomy or the removal of the uterus is the last resort in this scenario.
This is because it involves surgical risk, anaesthetic risk, removal of ovaries which lead to premature menopause and hence decreased bone strength and ageing.
I will also suggest her to go for medications or Mirena and if not cured by these, then only she should resort to hysterectomy.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
