Is Vein Protrusion On Ankle Indicative Of Deep Vein Thrombosis?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: Hi, I twisted my ankle last night and the vein on the inside of my ankle is now protruding and looks "zig-zagged." Is this a major concern? I have a picture if necessary. It was quite painful at first, but I am able to move my ankle and put some weight on it. There really isn't any swelling, just tenderness on the inside of my ankle near the vein. I'm mostly worried about Deep Vein Thrombosis/a blood clot forming. Is this something I should be concerned about? I'm out of the country and about to get on a very long plane ride to head home in a few hours as well which adds to this concern.

Brief Answer:
Not due to deep vein thrombosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have seen the attached images. The protruding vein is likely to be due to an inflammation or the injury. It is not suggestive of a deep vein thrombosis. A ligament sprain is likely. It is best to decrease the weight bearing and keep the foot elevated.
Do use a crepe bandage or elastic brace to wrap the ankle for support. It is not a serious issue. Please do not worry.
I hope this answers your query.
