Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask a Doctor service,
I carefully read your query and understand your concern.
Hives are generally due to an allergic reaction and in few cases, patients with food allergies or allergy to medications may also experience joint pain as well. Weakness is common with hives. You will need to drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated.
Normally, the treatment with antihistamines and steroids should help control the symptoms. Food allergy may cause hives up to 2 weeks after the last exposure to that food. So, you may get hives on and off.
Try to pay attention what may be causing you a worsening of the symptoms and avoid it (food, deodorants, creams, medications, any chemical or environment). Sometimes skin allergy tests may be indicated to isolate the cause of the allergy.
If you do not see any improvement with this treatment you are having, other rare causes of hives and joint pain may be considered such as autoimmune conditions.
In this case, some blood tests such as CBC with differential, ERS, ANA, RF, and in some cases even biopsy of the lesions may be considered.
I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
General and Family Physician
