Question : Just received these test results, waiting for a referral to a Kidney specialist, these test have been high starting in 2012 and I felt it needed to be looked at. What can you tell me about this. I did have a kidney infection 3 years ago.

Glucose, Serum 100 mg/dL 65 - 99 mg/dL H
BUN 39 mg/dL 6 - 24 mg/dL H
Creatinine, Serum or Plasma 1.23 mg/dL 0.57 - 1.00 mg/dL H
GFR Estimated Not Afr/Am 49 mL/min/1.73 >59 mL/min/1.73 L
GFR Estimated If Afr/Am 57 mL/min/1.73 >59 mL/min/1.73 L
BUN/Creatinine Ratio 32 9 - 23 H

Brief Answer:
slight deterioration in kidney function

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is understandable to be concerned regarding any changes to blood test results

(1)the time that the blood glucose levels were taken would be important. If they were done as a fasting sample then normal is less than 99, if it was done 2 hours after a meal, then normal would be 140.
These apply to persons who are not known diabetics, if you are a known diabetic, the goals are different.

(2) the creatinine would be used to calculate the GFR (glomerular filtration rate), this tells you how the kidneys are filtering.
Unfortunately 45 to 59 range indicates there is mild to moderate deterioration of kidney function.

Both of the possible values fall in this range.

This means that there is mild change in the kidney, this would cause the change in urea and creatinine which would then affect the ratio.

Further change can be prevented by- (1)tight control of blood pressure if this is an issues
(2)tight control of blood sugar of this is an issue
(3)no smoking if this is an issue
(4)avoiding meds that affect the kidneys such as aspirin or cataflam or ibuprofen etc. Certain antibiotics can also cause problems.
(5)control of cholesterol
(6)healthy diet

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
Thanks.
