Question : My 10 year old son has a oblong rash on inner thigh of his leg. It's pink, a little bumpy and very dry. its been there for more than a week. He is very fair skinned. It's not from rubbing anything. He is very skinny. Any thoughts what it might be and how to treat it?

                                    Brief Answer:
Dermatitis or fungal infection are likely- recommendations below
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask a Doctor service,
I carefully read your query and also checked the uploaded image.
Very likely the rashos due to dermatitis/eczema as these cause lumpy dry rash. A fungal infection may cause a similar rash as well.
As for treatment, a combination of a steroid and antifungal would be helpful. For instance, apply a steroid cream thinlayer on the lesion (hydrocortisone or betamethasone) twice a day and over it can apply an antifungal cream (miconazole, clotrimazole or similar drug) twice a day.
It is safer to use the combination because if this is a fungal infection steroids alone can make it worse. If steroids are added to antifungal will help the rash settle faster.
I would recommend this treatment for 7-10 days. You should notice improvement within the first 3-4 days.
If no better or there is any wrdening, he will need to have it examined again.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
