Question : My 2 year old daughter seems to have been bitten by an insect at night. She feels itchy and keeps scratching the affected area. I have attached a snapshot.

What ointment or powder should I apply to relieve the itchy sensation?

Regards,

Ryan

Brief Answer:
Looks like urticaria, antihistamine like cetrizine will help

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for being on 'Ask A Doctor' service...

I have gone through the query and checked the image too.

Red raised itchy lesion of this kind is called urticarial rashes. This can be due to insect bite or allergy to something.

Here giving antihistamines like levocetirizine will help. Levocetirizine will help in decreasing the lesions and also in itching. The syrup contains 2.5 mg in 5 ml and the dose for this age is 2.5 ml once a day.

You can apply calamine lotion or coconut oil, as this will also help in itching.

If there is a prior history of the similar lesion and you have noticed that it is due to mosquito bites then follow all the measures to avoid mosquito bite.

Most of the time it improves with antihistamines only but if it is not improving then we may need to start steroids and a pediatrician consultation will be needed for clinical evaluation.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more doubts.
Regards
