Question : My 9yr old grand daughter had a nosebleed at school today that took more than an hour and several blood filled tissues to stop , later after school she coughed or gagged up a half dollar sized chunk of blood and said she could now breathe better. She has had some nosebleeds in the past. Is this maybe allergies or should I be more concerned and take her to immediate care? She is in no pain.

I have gone through your query and here is my advice.

As per your history, recurrent nose bleeding should get evaluated. So kindly follow up with a bit more information.

Please let me know does she have cold, allergy, history of injury?

For that you can use nasal saline drops or petroleum Jelly locally. Avoid forceful nose blowing or nose picking. Avoid hot and humid environment. Use humidifier.

Still it would be better to consult with pediatrician for detailed medical examination. She may require complete hemogram, prothrombin time, INR (international normalized ratio) to rule out any other possibilities like bleeding disorder.

During nose bleeding, never lie down. Give pressure for 10 mins. Watch for symptoms like dizziness..
